Biography

Mehran Shahmansouri was born in 1978 in Aligoudarz, Iran. He received his Ph.D. from Arak University in 2010 in the field of Plasma Physics. He is currently Associate Professor (from 2015) of Plasma Physics at Arak University. His research interests include the “Waves and Instabilities” in plasma, “Surface Waves” ,  “Plasmonic”, and “Plasma Medicine”.

MAIN RESEARCH TOPICS:

 

˜  Kinetic roughening study of thin film surfaces using atomic force microscopy (AFM),

˜  Synthesis and Characterization of magnetic nanoparticles, ferrites and polymers.

 

A Brief Account of Work:

 

We fabricate the metal nanostructures, which are so-called because one or more of their characteristic dimensions is of the order of a few nano-meters or less. This is currently a very active and exciting area of research, as so many of the techniques which make materials engineering possible on this ultra-fine scale have only recently been developed. Moreover the properties of metal nanostructures make them both scientifically interesting and industrially useful. For example, films consisting of alternating layers of a ferromagnetic and a non-magnetic metal can exhibit 'giant magnetoresistance', because they are magnetically structured on a length scale which is short compared to the appropriate electron mean free path. This has led to their incorporation in magnetic field sensors used in hard disk drives.

We use the electrochemical methods (electrodeposition) for fabricating nanostructures, showing significant giant magnetoresistance by these means. Electrodeposition is not only inexpensive (it uses very simple equipment), but is also highly versatile.

As well as fabricating materials, we investigate their physical properties, especially magnetic and electrical properties of nanostructural materials. Current projects include the growth and characterization of magnetic thin films and multilayers, fabrication and characterization of magnetic polymers and nanoparticles. 

Another aspect of our research is electrodeposition of Pt on different substrates especially Ti, which in particular is employed as corrosion resistive electrodes in Reverse Electro-dialysis (EDR) units, where the industrial waste water is recycled.

We also study surface roughness of the electrodeposited films using Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), which in particular important in understanding the nucleation process.
